(Part 5) Bullets: A Last Stand of the Wreckers story.
Springer stood alone on the command deck of Debris, a crumbling Autobot space station in orbit around Klo, and stared at 12 names on a computer screen.
In his right hand he was holding an Autobot bullet (of sorts) that had been fired by a Decepticon (of sorts). The bullet was, in fact, a benign projectile: inside there was no vein of combustible energon, just a data chip containing the latest report from Agent 113, an Autobot working undercover at the Decepticon Justice Division. The name was misleading: it was the DJD's job to scour their own ranks for dissidents and turncoats, and then murder them. Information provided by Agent 113 often led the Autobots to Decepticons who, being dissidents and turncoats, were willing to betray their ex-comrades in exchange for protection against reprisals.
"Your friend has a funny way of making contact," First Aid had said when he'd got in touch three days earlier, and he was right. Terrified of being detected, the increasingly eccentric Agent 113 had developed a unique way of reporting his findings. Instead of, say, a midnight rendezvous on the steps of the Chomskian Embassy, he would wait until the DJD attacked some Autobots and then shoot the 'enemy' with a data-laced bullet. Springer had had to make sure that select medics at key facilities were always on the lookout for Agent 113's calling card: a single bullet hole in the right 'eye' of an Autobot symbol.
With his latest communiqué, Agent 113 had relayed concerns within the DJD that nothing had been heard of Garrus-9 since the Autobot prison had been overrun by Sky Quake's Predators during the early stages of the Surge. The DJD had despatched an exploratory force to investigate. They'd never come back.
Springer had shared this information with High Command, who- on the basis of an earlier report from Agent 113 - had originally concluded that G-9 had been utterly destroyed. They were now faced with the possibility that Fortress Maximus and Co had not only survived the Surge, but were repelling Decepticon invasion parties while waiting to be rescued. All of which had led Prowl to contact Springer to discuss plans for Operation: Retrieval.
Springer would have preferred a more inspiring name, but it was typical of Prowl to opt for something clinical and detached. Fort Max and his team didn't need 'retrieving', they needed rescuing. Drab name aside, Operation: Retrieval was why he was doing what Impactor and Crest and Hyperion before him had done: staring at names on a screen and deciding who he would ask to join the Wreckers.
Guzzle had never held the Matrix before.
The object in his hand was the perfect weight: heavy enough to matter, to tug on the wire sinews in his forearm, but easy to carry. A good size, too: portable, but big enough to stop Decepticons in their tracks. Best of all was the way it felt: the perfect union of holder and held, it sang in his grip.
Guzzle had never held the Matrix before and probably never would, but surely it could never feel as satisfying, as fundamentally right, as it felt when he picked up The Judge, his favorite handgun.
He'd lived an itinerant life of late, latching onto a succession of Autobot squads in the hope of recapturing the sense of belonging that he'd felt when serving in his old platoon. He'd decided to help with Dipstick's reconstruction project until he came across something better suited to his talents (those talents chiefly consisting of the ability to insert various deadly projectiles into various deadly Decepticons). And while the thrill of close combat hadn't entirely deserted him, this most unreflective of robots had recently identified a certain… hollowness inside him. His first reaction, of course, had been to seek medical help. Fixit had carried out a full body search and, finding no internal cavities, suggested that the hollow feeling was not an early indication of corrodia gravis but "an emotional response". Guzzle had pondered this at length, until a pang of acute discomfort had heralded the arrival of bona fide insight: he was in mourning. Most of his old platoon had died trying to rescue Kup, and he was still struggling to accept their deaths and the circumstances surrounding them.
His new life on Igue Moor - a fuel depot on the outskirts of Babu Yar- had settled into a reassuring rhythm. Every day, a few hours before dawn, he and The Judge would go outside and shoot statues. If he'd felt a flicker of guilt when he'd first started using the remains of Sacred Debating Chamber as a firing range, he hadn't recognized it as such.
He loaded a handful of tracer bullets into his gun and looked around for today's first target. On the statue of Babu Fost, the Great Pacifist, he found it: a forehead scar. He slid his green targeting visor over his optics and was beginning to squeeze the trigger when the unthinkable happened: he stopped. This frightened him; he'd always seen a gunshot through. He wondered whether his overworked trigger finger had seized up, but no, Fixit had only last week given him new digits. Which meant that this was something else entirely: another 'feeling'. Something, he sensed, to do with his own mortality. Thankfully, the moment passed quickly and he felt sufficiently at ease with himself to unload an entire magazine of tracers into the Great Pacifist's head.
For some reason the luminous green tracer trails did not fade away. Instead, they hovered over the floor of the Sacred Debating Chamber and began gathering themselves up. They started flickering. Then rippling. Then shimmering.
The Judge slipped from Guzzle's new fingers.

Revisiting this now that I know more, because I can’t help wondering about what was really going on at Delphi and whether it was just what it seems or whether there’s more to it than that.
The timeline as far as I understand it:
Delphi is constructed
Pharma is assigned there (I'm assuming this happens first)
First aid joins
Ambulon joins
Sometime later Springer recruits Aid to look for messages from agent 113 in autobot badges (source: Bullets)
LSoTW
Agent 113 discovered
Records of patient deaths increasing begin 2 years prior to start of MTMTE (MTMTE #4)
First Aid demoted (flashback shown in MTMTE #4, but exact timing unclear)
MTMTE #4-5
Everything from here on out is purely speculation on my part based on the information above.
It seems reasonable that to set up an operation like agent 113's infiltration of the DJD is something that would take a considerable amount of time and resources. And it's known that First Aid was later recruited and became directly involved in that operation. Also, Pharma was directly recruited/assigned to Delphi by Prowl (MTMTE #40) who managed covert operations for the autobots. Considering all this, it then seems possible that Delphi's unusual design was indeed because it was never intended to be just a medical base or mining outpost, but to be a station within the DJD's territory that could support agent 113's activities if needed. Further, there is no clear explanation within MTMTE for why exactly Tarn takes an interest in Delphi. However, if the time that Tarn first took an interest in the facility is around the same time as the start of the death logs First Aid broadcasts, then this would be somewhere around the same time that agent 113 is implied to be discovered. And therefore, that Tarn started looking around Delphi at that specific time because an autobot traitor had just been found within the DJD and the autobot base conspicuously on DJD territory would suddenly be a lot more interesting for the potential it had to be connected to the traitor within the DJD.
Other Thoughts:
In addition to First Aid being directly contacted by Springer (and therefore by extension the Wreckers), Pharma is shown in flashbacks to have worked around the Wreckers (SotW) and with the new institute (MTMTE #14). All of which could make sense in relation to a facility that might be used covertly, as opposed to assigning an unknown medic or someone like Ratchet to that position.
There's also a potential explanation for Ambulon's presence in this scenario beyond just hoping that he'd be overlooked. Because why have a Decepticon defector stationed in close proximity to the group infamous for hunting down Decepticon traitors? Maybe for the same reason that Shockwave was travelling around with a ship full of others that were on the list (Lost Light #14). Maybe because the hope was that if Tarn did look at Delphi, he would see Ambulon and not see anything else that might be going on.
I've been reading through MTMTE for the first time and I just went back to issue #5 and it caught my attention that Pharma, after his involvement with the red rust is discovered, disappears into a fake floor below one of the cryogenic regeneration (C.R.) chambers. Initially, I hadn't thought much of this, but really, why would there be a false room (seemingly with rooftop access as well) built into a medical base? And how did it get there?
So far I've thought of the following possible explanations:
Delphi was constructed as more than just a medical station and considering it's strategic positioning within DJD territory, this secret area was constructed to support the possibility of more covert operations.
Pharma created the space or disguised an existing area of the base to be harder to find and access in order to hide his dealings with Tarn. However, if this was the case, why then would he have stated that he "intended to hide in a C.R. chamber, but they were all occupied" when explaining his choice of the quarantine room for soundproofing? Because if he created the secret space under the C.R. chamber surely he could have soundproofed it and hidden there? Unless the point was to be able to be found somewhere more public to increase the plausible deniability that Pharma was in any way involved with the events shutting down Delphi (in which case, the room full of what appears to be t-cogs for the DJD would obviously not be an option).

So, clearly I'm late with this and this was released a while ago, but I wanted to post it anyway for anyone who hadn't seen it.
Please note that this post contains SPOILERS FOR THE ENTIRE FIRST SEASON! If you don't want that, please don't read the rest!

Episode 101-102: Secret Legacy - ROBBY, reeling from his family’s move from Philly to the rural town of Witwicky, finds new joy and purpose when he and his sister MO bond with the first-ever Earth-born transformers: the TERRANS, TWITCH and THRASH. Tied emotionally to their human siblings by emotionsharing cyber-sleeves, the Terrans quickly become the target for the cyber-human villain MANDROID. It’ll take OPTIMUS and his AUTOBOTS along with RANGER DOT and DR. MALTO to save the kids and Terrans, all while keeping their existence and adoption a secret to prowling DECEPTICONS and the mysterious agency of GHOST.
Episode 103: Moo-ving In - As the Malto family gets used to its new members, Bumblebee hopes to quickly knock out his mission to train the Terrans in all things Autobot. But he’s flummoxed when they seem more interested in cows and games than the wisdom he has to impart; maybe all parties could do a little more listening.
Episode 104: H.O.U.S.E. Rules - Thrash chafes at the “restrictive” Malto family H.O.U.S.E. rules, and he convinces Mo to go along with his loopholes around them. But when the Decepticon Swindle does some exploiting of his own to convince Thrash and Mo to help find his missing brother, they soon find themselves playing by a far more dangerous set of rules.
Episode 105: Classified - Special Agent Schloder is in pursuit of a Decepticon that targets kids (really a misidentification of Twitch and Robby). Meanwhile, Dot is put through GHOST orientation, where she learns that GHOST’s intentions might not be completely above board.
Episode 106: Traditions - Robby begs off Alex’s traditional wakwak hunt, so Alex shares his family history with Bumblebee, while Twitch, eager to gain her own traditions, encounters her “Dad2”—Wheeljack.
Episode 107: Friends and Family - The Terrans’ erratic behavior may be reflecting Mo and Robby’s anxiety about their first day at their new school. Or it could be something far worse…
Episode 108: Decoy - While out on a mission to capture three tricky tuneful Mini-Cassette bots, Megatron and Optimus Prime have a disagreement about GHOST’s treatment of Decepticons.
Episodes 109-110: Age of Evolution - Twitch and Thrash wonder if they’re the only two Terrans in the universe, and they venture to discover if that’s true. With the help of Optimus, Bumblebee, Alex, Robby, and Mo, they relocate the cave of their origin and find much more than just the Emberstone. With the birth of three new Terrans (Hashtag, Nightshade, and Jawbreaker), the Malto family has grown. But will these new Allie’s be enough to rescue Dot and Megatron from the clutches of Mandroid?
Episode 111: Hashtag Oops - Twitch helps Hashtag choose her alt-mode, and it takes them both for a wild and GHOST-ly ride. Meanwhile, Alex and Bee struggle to hold down the fort with the new Terrans when Dot has to leave for work and the kids go to school.
Episode 112: Outtakes - Jawbreaker is feeling nervous about his alt-mode. How does he choose the right one? A conversation with Mom gives him an idea: use a camera to inspire bots into telling him why they chose theirs! But when Hashtag gets involved, the scale of the project gets a little out of hand.
Episode 113: Missed Connection - When Nightshade’s feeling isolated from the rest of the Malto family, they find a new connection in the most unlikely of places…
Episode 114: Security Protocols - When Mo, Robby, and their Terran siblings are locked down in the Dugout, there’s no way to avoid longsimmering conflict.
Episode 115: Bear Necessities - When Twitch gifts Dot a baby bear cub for Mother’s Day, the two of them and Robby embark on a journey to return the baby to its own mom…who, unbeknownst to them, is tussling with the rest of the Maltos at the homestead!

ChouGAMER!! Pretty Cure Info Post
This is not comprehensive, and I'm missing a lot of nomenclature for transformation items, finishers, and alternate forms/styles. I'm also lacking visual references for a few of the villains.
Let's start with the Cures!
The Pretty Cure are the legendary gamers of Virtua Land, who even have a temple to enshrine the new incarnations of each of the four Legends. The temple is overseen by the Grand Wizard, whose duty is to find the next generation of Pretty Cure should crisis befall Virtua Land.
To transform, the Cures need two things: their Check Pendant, a necklace/communicator that contains their "save data", and one of three Game Cards, devices that resemble train passes and contain the "game data", including a piece of equipment unique to each Cure. Every Cure begins at Level 1 and gains EXP via prevailing in combat against the Guricchu. As the "season" progresses, the Cures unlock progressively stronger equipment, finishers, and eventually unlock their second and third Game Cards.
Yuuki Igarashi is our white lead Cure, Cure Legend. Her theme is classic JRPGs such as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. Though she strikes a very gyaru-like image, don't be fooled—she's a hardcore gamer, though she initially keeps that side of herself hidden from her classmates. Her friends call her Yuu-tan. Her initial Game Card is Innocent Fantasy, which comes with the equipment Brave Sword.
Yuuki is 5'3", weighs 104 pounds, has an AB blood type, and her three sizes are 83-57-84. She is 16 at the start of the "season", and her birthday is January 1st.
Kaya Karizaki is our blue Cure, Cure Bullet. Her theme is shooter games, both military-style FPS-es and bullet hell games. Kaya is quite egotistical and self-absorbed due to being a champion eSports player, but she's also a fiercely loyal friend who's not afraid to throw hands to protect those she loves. Her initial Game Card is Dangan XX, which comes with the equipment Buster Shot K.
Kaya is 5'5", weighs 113 pounds, has an O blood type, and her three sizes are 82-55-82. She is 17 at the start of the "season", and her birthday is October 10th.
Mika Hayase is our red Cure, Cure Turbo. Her theme is racing games, specifically arcade-style racing games. In comparison to the outgoing Yuuki and the loud, boisterous Kaya, Mika is extremely shy and difficult to approach, let alone talk to. Her family owns an auto repair shop with an attached junkyard, and she's spent several years working on cars and fixing up junkers for her parents to sell. Despite her shyness, she gets extremely intense when playing racing games. Mika's initial Game Card is Gekisou Full Throttle, which comes with the equipment Turbo Rusher.
Mika is 5'4", weighs 119 pounds, has an A- blood type, and her three sizes are 87-58-89. She is 18 at the start of the "season", and her birthday is on August 8th.
Ren Tatsumaki is our yellow Cure, Cure Dragon. Her theme is fighting games, specifically arcade-style fighting games. Ren is a strange individual in every conceivable way, from being notably very tall to not understanding what should be basic common knowledge. Frankly speaking, she's simply an eccentric weirdo that's difficult to understand, but her skill at fighting games is unmatched. Ren's initial Game Card is Kachidoki Prizefight, which comes with the equipment Champion Knuckle.
Ren is 5'10" and weighs 122 pounds, has a B+ blood type, and her three sizes are 80-56-82. She is 17 at the start of the "season", and her birthday is on July 7th.
Fia is our mid-season redeemed villain purple Cure, Cure Fever. Her theme is twofold: rhythm games and puzzle games. As a former agent of the Guricchu, Fia has a difficult time understanding almost everything about human culture, and her seeming inability to express emotion compounds that. If you do get a rise out of her, woe unto you.
Fia is 5'2" and weighs ??? pounds, has a ?? blood type, and her three sizes are ??-??-??. She is ?? at the time she joins the team, and her birthday is on November 11th.
Arcade is not a Cure in and of herself, but rather is the Cures' token helper from another world. She's a level 1000 Grand Wizard and keeper of the Legendary Temple in Virtua Land, which has been invaded by the Guricchu. As the keeper of the Legendary Temple, it falls to Arcade to find the four Legendary Gamers, the Pretty Cure, and save Virtua Land.
Arcade is a prodigy, being the youngest Grand Wizard in Virtua Land's history, and that comes with a bit of an ego. However, she cares deeply about games, and Virtua Land as a whole, and as such takes her position as aide to the Legendary Gamers very seriously. She also talks quite archaically, funnily enough.
Arcade is 4'9", weighs 94 pounds, has a ?? blood type, and her three sizes are 78-54-79. She is ??? at the start of the "season", and her birthday is December 12th.
Now for some villains!
The villains in ChouGAMER!! Precure are the Guricchu, an insectoid alien race that harvest negative feelings that stem from people playing video games, whether it's anger, sadness, or anything else. The monsters they summon are called Fukoheida, and the grunts that accompany Fukoheida are called Chumins.
Gokipunch is the first and most prominent general in the "season". Though quite weak at first, Alphan's philosophy of winning through trickery spoke to her, and she opportunistically took advantage of several moments of weakness among her higher-ups to get promoted to one of Alphan's generals, something unheard of among her caste of Guricchu.
Gokipunch is quite mean-spirited, often mocking the Cures or picking at their individual insecurities to get them to falter in battle. She also has the ability to inflict [Charm] status on civilians, causing them to follow her orders until the spell is broken. Her Fukoheida have her antennae and bright pink eyes, while her Chumins are all cockroach-inspired. Gokipunch herself is loosely themed on dating sims and visual novels.
Mothrom is the second of Alphan's generals to appear. Though seemingly disinterested and lethargic, she's arguably more sadistic and cruel than Gokipunch, using her associated [Poison] status on civilians and Cures alike to harvest higher quantities of negative energy and summon stronger Fukoheida.
Mothrom is loosely themed around tabletop games, and many of the Fukoheida she summons are with the aid of painted miniatures that she's often shown working on during the "episodes" she appears in.
Fear is Fia pre-redemption, and serves as the first dark/evil Cure figure for the girls to fight. Her battle form is themed off of horror games, from slasher thrillers to zombie games to survival horror. Eventually, she's defeated by the ChouGAMER!! team and later joins them.
Deadhand is the second humanoid general and quasi-dark/evil Cure figure. Deadhand is Alphan's hunting dog of sorts, and is originally summoned to recapture Fia and bring her back, but eventually Alphan orders them to destroy the Precure. The resemblance to Kaya is quite uncanny, and mentioned several times over the course of the "season". Deadhand's combat abilities are themed around card games, and they have a deck of ability cards they swipe through the card reader on their wrist to fight with.
Alphan is the leader of the Guricchu. She shows a fondness and even care for her subordinates, but when it comes to Earth and particularly the Precure (and those they love), the best way to describe her is heartless and cruel. At the end of the day, she wants them to suffer and harvest their energy.

WIP, don't reblog! This is a design on my take of Dominus Ambus' Vos/Agent 113 alt mode that I've been working on. This has been sitting on my computer for a long time and I have no idea where to go from here. Critiques or advice or ideas welcome. I want it to look like his canon Vos robot mode can transform into this. Basically, I just don't like the car idea when he literally has massive hooks and claws for hands. It just reminds me of a werewolf. Plus I think it'd be a cruel irony that Prowl would've designed for the guy.

unlikely hero - so many small times, but probably mostly Rewind saving everyone from Overlord
the double agent - Brainstorm was literally a double agent, but then there's the whole Getaway thing
long lost sibling - suddenly Minimus Ambus
time travel paradox - functionist universe arc
The Mastermind - Grand Architect
Supernatural Twist - first there was sparkeaters, then there was the fake afterlife with the Guiding Hand, and then there was those beings outside the universe who wanted to be let in to consume it
The Doppelganger - kind of that bit where the Grand Architect turns up looking like Pharma. Not exactly tho. But close.
Reversal of Roles - the whole entire Megatron. Optimus' descent into antagonism of course not reatured here
Untouchable Hero - there's not so much of this, but one could argue that we are seeing Thunderclash at the end of his arc of having gone through this before the series
Forgotten Past - poor Skids. You forgot Grindcore for a reason, buddy. Chromedome too, but there was no exploring what he forgot it just stayed forgotten.
Betrayal Within - now which angle are we going to look at this because we have a few to choose from. Could be the Getaway arc. Could be the alternate Lost Light's Brainstorm. And that if we reframe it or "rig it in our favor," it can lose all of its harmful and dark aspects?

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS
Psalm 103
Are blessings countable? Have you ever taken account of the blessings of God in your life? How many can you count?
Or are you one of those who thinks "What has God done for me?
Many would think God hasn’t done anything for them or what they expect Him to do.
Blessings are mostly benefits, that are either underserved or unasked for! Our blessings are usually a source of further blessing to others. The blessings of God encompass the spiritual, physical, material, emotional, financial, and much, more. God is often the agent of blessing in every sense, and we can always ask God for all sorts of blessings.
The Lord uses others mostly to bless us- we may receive blessings from unseemly people in sometimes unexpected places for unexplainable reasons but all orchestrated by the Lord.
Psalm 103 is a psalm of joyous praise, in which David rises from a thankful acknowledgement of personal blessings to a lively celebration of God's gracious attributes, as not only intrinsically worthy of praise but as especially suited to man's frailty.
This psalm contains the most affectionate sentiments of gratitude to God for his mercies, and the need to continue to trust in God and be obedient to him.
The benefits and blessings of trusting God are enormous, including His pardon of sin, redeeming the lost, satisfying our needs and crowning our efforts.
So, praise the Lord with songs of thanksgiving and victory for the blessings of the past years and for years ahead.
Count your blessings- Inherent in blessing is the idea of invoking special favours on someone who is appreciated and loved. God will often bring about blessings for his people that amount to a thorough transformation—both literal and spiritual.
God crowns our lives with His goodness and makes our paths drip with fatness (success, Prosperity and more) according to Psalm 65:11.
Did you wake yourself up this morning? Do you think your alarm did? He’s the same God in the morning, noon, and night, from the rising of the sun to its setting, says Psalm 113:3, this is a countable blessing, count it as one.
What the Lord has done for me, I cannot tell it all…. keep counting and telling and testifying to put the enemy to shame.
So, shout hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
Christians can access every blessing in Christ, God’s provision, and favours. The blessing package described in Deuteronomy 28 is many: blessings wherever you are or whatever you do; blessings in your family, with your work, and in your possessions; victory over your enemies; blessings of being established as God's holy people. And accordingly, all these blessings shall come on you, and overtake you, if you will hearken unto the voice of the Lord your God.”
Look back over the year to today and count your blessings.
Romans 8:37-38 says all things work out for us, even if not as we planned, wanted, or more- we’re alive and well. You conquered Corona, sickness, homelessness, hunger, and many more not by your power or might but by the Spirit of God. Glory be to God!
If anything is missing from your list of prayer requests, go to God with thanksgiving and praise, according to 1 Thessalonians 5:18, and be assured that there’s still plenty for you in 2023. We can trust and expect God to lead us into His will! So, count your blessings! And more will follow.
PRAYER: Lord, help me daily praise you for the many blessings you have bestowed on me and to be satisfied with your promises to do more in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Chapter 1: Introducing Masculinity Culture (p.113) The Case of the IDF The IDF is more than just the major state organization. From a cultural standpoint, it is the state of Irasel. When people in Israel or elsewhere think about Israeliness, they think about military culture. The IDF throws together men and women from different settings - a liberal urban lifestyle, a socialist kibbutz environment, a national-religious upbringing, a Russian new-immigrant community, or a Mizrachi culture, to give but a few examples from our stories - to create the closest thing to a shared Israeli identity. The only way these individuals can make sense of their diverse backgrounds is to adhere to the one binding force available for Israeli men, the predominating power of the military. Mandatory military service begins at the age of eighteen and is followed by annual reserve duty. Until recent years, undergoing military service was virtually a prerequisite for entering adult life. Those who did not go faced a social stigma and limited job-advancement opportunities. Although this has changed somewhat among upper-class circles, it is still true for disadvantaged groups for whom military service is a major lever of social mobility. The military is not only the key agent of socialization into Israeli society, but into the masculine gender role in particular. Although the IDF is the only military with compulsory service for women, it nevertheless operates under a gender regime that intensifies gender distinctions. Men are conscripted for three years, and women are discharged after a year and nine months or less. Men are called for annual reserve duty throughout much of their adult lives, and women are expected to raise their children. Recent years have seen breakthrough legal advances in the position of women in the IDF, but for the most part, men still hold exclusive combat roles and serve alone on the battlefield.

(p. 115) A most telling anecdote demonstrating this point is the title of a recent general dictionary for Israeli slang, Lexicon for Hebrew and Military Slang. As its editors note, many terms in common Hebrew slang are indistinguishable from the military jargon. Some telling slang terms are specifically examined in the succeeding sections. The IDF is bound by an underlying Zionist ideology. The Zionist revolution entailed not only the return of the Jewish people to their "old-new" homeland, the Land of Israel, but also the emancipation of the Jewish man. The image of the Jewish man was now to be rid of associations with its Diaspora version that spelled dislocated, "sheep-like" passive-feminine existence and replaced with images of physical labor, prowess, harshness, and sexuality. Zionist masculinity was reconstructed as a masculinity of the body, realized through settlement of the land, and a masculinity of self-defense, accomplished through military power. Influenced by other European nationalist movements, the Zionist project endorsed what George Mosse called the myth of participation in war. This view crystallized with the 1948 generation of the Sabra, Israeli-born youth who fought for the establishment of the Israeli State. The Sabra represented everything that the old Jew lacked: youth, strength, health, physical labor, and deep-rootedness. Following the founding of the IDF, the image of the Jewish warrior has been reinforced as a state institution. As in many countries, the Israeli military has become the key cultural site for the construction of what Connell describes as hegemonic masculinity. In the cultures of contemporary industrialized democracies this make-believe masculinity draws on traits such as independence, risk taking, aggressiveness, rationality, and heterosexuality. Within the military, such ideals are transformed to values of soldiering. This is especially profound in combat training. The ultimate test of manhood is the test of battle. Accordingly, the combat role is the core archetype of the military organization: it claims the highest status and defines the meaning of military service on a persona, organizational, and public level.
